Lancaster, Mount Vernon, and Annapolis

A few weeks ago Steve's parents came and spent some time with us. It was so nice to have them here. We were able to go and do a few fun things. We went to Pennsylvania for a niece's baptism, and afterwards we went to Lancaster. The pictures below are of the Amish. Lancaster was a beautiful area and part of me longed for the simple lifestyle the Amish have. However, they work harder than me because everything is done by hand like the laundry and plowing fields.

Later we went to Annapolis. It is a very cute town. We were able to walk around the deck of a boat and stroll the streets. While Grandma and Grandpa were visiting, Kate became best friends with Grandpa. I have never seen her fall head over heels for anyone before, and it was quite funny how she ALWAYS wanted Grandpa. She would just go and sit by him (or on him), ask him to read to her, wanted him next to her at the dinner table and in the car, and wanted to stay and play with Grandpa when Grandma and I were out one day. Kate helped Grandpa rake leaves, and then Grandpa sat and read while Kate brought pillows, umbrellas and herself sporting her swimsuit out to play in the front yard (it was a nice warm day)! I guess it is really no wonder she loves Grandpa, who wouldn't! Although we are far away from our families, we are able to see them quite frequently I am grateful for the time my children get to spend with their grandparents.

Lastly, we went to Mount Vernon. This is were George and Martha Washington lived and where George Washington died. It is a beautiful place and it overlooks the Potomac River. I really enjoyed learning more about George Washington and my appreciation for him deepened. One thing that stands out to me is that he gave up his presidency after two terms because he didn't want to be a ruler or dictator, and that set the standard for all the other presidents to follow. He also was modest and humble. He decorated his living room so everyone would know that he was a farmer. He felt pride in that. He inherited his house from his brother and then made many add ons. George and Martha were never able to have children, but loved children and welcomed them into their home. George Washington died quickly after he caught a cold and his throat swelled and he couldn't breathe. I love the history of our great nation. It is amazing! And thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for getting us out to explore the many wonderful things that surround us here in the DC area (I am kind of a homebody and need a little encourgement every now and then to do this kind of stuff!).
